Bionenergy plant Helsinki
ITP’s Powerclad scaffold sheeting is being used in support of a major new bioenergy plant in Helsinki which will help one of Finland’s largest energy companies to become carbon neutral by 2035.
With over 550,000 customers throughout the country, Helen Ltd is phasing out coal use by 2029 in accordance with the Finnish Government’s energy policy and is stepping up its use of biomass as the fastest method to replace coal use. To support Helen’s long-term strategy, the company is building its new Vuosaari C facility in the Vuosaari power plant area, north of the existing natural gas power plants which were commissioned in the 1990s.
With a fuel heat input of 220 MW, the new plant will use forest-based biomass and harness world-leading circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler technology supplied and installed by Sumitomo SHI FW. The main fuel will be wood chips, which is obtained as a by-product of forestry and cannot be utilised in other ways, and all fuel purchased has either sustainability certification or comes from otherwise controlled sources. Helen Ltd is aiming to start production in the heating plant during the heating season of 2022–2023.
Powerclad FR Standard was chosen for use on the project by Arme, a leading Finnish service and contracting company which provides industrial insulation and scaffolding services to domestic and international markets. The system is providing durable and flame retardant containment and protection throughout the project. Its flame retardancy adheres to the EU standard EN13501-Bs1,d0 which is required for safety-critical installations such as energy plants.
