ITP membrane chosen for another major airport project
ITP’s FlameOut Block flame-retardant vapour control layer was chosen to form part of the building envelope at the new Red Sea Airport in Saudi Arabia.
The project will deliver the first and only airport in the region to include water aerodromes, areas of open water that can be used by seaplanes to land and take-off. The facility is designed to provide shaded areas and natural ventilation that minimises reliance on air conditioning.
Red Sea Global, the developer behind many of the world’s most ambitious regenerative tourism destinations, appointed Reem Emirates Saudi to construct the façade and roof shell of the airport’s landside facilities. The design aesthetic takes inspiration from the forms of the surrounding desert, the green oasis and the sea, typified by the roof shell’s dune-like pods radiating out from the centre.
Reem Emirates Saudi will apply their expertise in energy-efficient and environmentally friendly solutions throughout the design of the facade, as well as in structural engineering, manufacturing and installation, all aligned with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certifications. The company is installing FlameOut Block inside the insulation layer to enhance air tightness and prevent moisture within the interior’s warm air from reaching the insulation.
FlameOut Block’s polyethylene-based membrane is compliant with all regulations including a Euroclass B-s1, d0 rating which meets requirements for fire safety. The engineered textile also provides excellent tensile strength in both roof and wall installations.
