Repelling the Radon

The closure of Pontymoile Primary School in 2014 has opened the opportunity for a new residential development in the south Wales town. The 2.2 acre site is being developed by social enterprise Bron Afon to provide 28 homes for rent and 11 to be offered for sale through Toerfan’s low-cost home ownership scheme, Help2Buy.

Assessment of the site prior to construction showed the presence of radon at the property. Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas, found throughout the world, but is particularly common in parts of Wales due to the local geology. Radon is a health hazard, linked to lung cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease. Appropriate ground protection measures minimise the risk of the gas entering the building. Protecting the new homes at Pontymoile is Powerbase Radon gas membrane. It is manufactured by Industrial Textiles and Plastics Limited, a North Yorkshire firm that is an industry leader in the development of technically advanced gas, VOC and hydrocarbon chemical resistant barrier membranes.

Powerbase Radon gas barrier membrane is BBA certified and is compliant to NHBC Amber 1 gas protection measures. In addition to providing effective protection against the gas with very low permeation rates, it also acts as a damp proof membrane.

Project contractors Sennybridge Ltd appointed ReeveTec Membranes to supply and install the Powerbase membrane. Providing technical support for all ITP’s geomembranes is Paul Harrison, who can advise on project specific requirements for new developments.

The Powerbase range of barrier materials include membranes specifically designed to enable brownfield development, with superior protection against volatile organic compounds (VOCs), hydrocarbons and a wide range of hazardous chemicals.
