Poundworld Groundworks Solution
Outside Leeds, on a prime 30-acre site near Junction 32 of the M62, a vast new warehouse has been under construction. Being developed by CDP Ltd, the development arm of the Marshall Construction Group, the £39.4 million property is the new retail distribution centre for Poundworld, the value retailer with more than 300 stores in the UK.
Assessment of the site determined the need for gas barrier protection to protect the building against radon, methane and CO2. The solution chosen by contractors Marshall Construction (West Yorkshire) Ltd was Powerbase® Multigas 300 from Industrial Textiles & Plastics Ltd of North Yorkshire. This barrier membrane is an aluminium laminate incorporating a foil between two layers of LDPE with a reinforcing scrim. “Our membrane provides technologically advanced protection that is compliant with the present BS8485 standard, which was implemented in June 2015,” said Paul Harrison, Account Manager for ITP’s ground membranes division.
Installing the membrane and preparing the groundworks for such a large site required detailed planning and scheduling. The area was divided into 40 equal sections and installation work began at the beginning of April, with completion in June. “Multigas 300 is a robust membrane ideal for standing up to this type of build process, involving steel reinforcement and multiple trades,” added Harrison.
Mark Ward, Property Director at Poundworld Retail, said: “We have a rapid store expansion programme over the next three years and the new distribution centre will aid our expansion plans, improve efficiency and allow for a broadening of our product range in our single and multi-price format stores.”
