Popping Up in Elephant & Castle

A new temporary retail space in Castle Square features a creative façade design made possible by an advanced UV resistant flame retardant membrane to protect the building envelope

London’s Elephant & Castle is undergoing a 15-year, £4 billlion regeneration programme. The current town centre development phase at Elephant Road includes the building 374 new homes for rent, 272 student studios, a supermarket, gym, crèche and several restaurants.

As part of the redevelopment, the ageing Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre, long the home to many small, independent traders, is to be closed later this year. Developers Delancey have commissioned a temporary, affordable retail space to provide a new home for these local traders, known as ‘The Herd’. The 5,000 square foot pop-up Castle Square will also have space for bars and cafes. Delancey’s Diana Barranco, community director for the Elephant and Castle town centre, said: “Castle Square will create a shopping destination at the heart of Elephant and Castle for the local community while the new town centre is being developed.
Designed by Turner Works Architects and built by contractors Corley + Woolley, the structure features a striking façade design using polycarbonate and larch partially open cladding.

The design necessitates special protection for the building envelope: high UV resistance, superior water tightness, and excellent flame retardant qualities. As the membrane will be visible behind the cladding, an attractive, unbranded surface is also desirable. The solution is UV Colour FR, a premier UV resistant flame retardant  façade membrane supplied by Industrial Textiles & Plastics (ITP). UV Colour FR is flame retardant to Class B,s2-d0 (EN 13501-1) and Class 0 (BS 476 Parts 6 & 7), has a W1 rating for water tightness and comes with a ten-year guarantee for UV resistance. Castle Square project features the ‘Coal’ standard-colour membrane, but the easy-to-install UV Colour FR also comes in seven other colourways for creative design possibilities.
