Project Description

POWERCLAD® Scaffold & containment sheeting

Putting a Damper on Disruption

The £8m refurbishment of a five-storey building in the heart of Manchester’s congested city centre is underway by Russells Construction for investor Boultbee Brooks Real Estate. Reducing the environmental impact for the occupants of the surrounding buildings was an important consideration for the team.

Scaffolding contractors Heywood Scaffolding Services sourced a new, advanced acoustic barrier material from North Yorkshire firm Industrial Textiles and Plastics Ltd. Powerclad® Sound Barrier offers superior sound attenuation at construction sites.

Simon Bower, project manager for Russells Construction at Brown Street, said: “The product was specified by the client for its acoustic properties  and is successfully reducing the impact of project noise for our neighbours, just as hoped.”

Powerclad Sound Barrier’s acoustic performance has been independently tested by the Acoustic Testing Laboratory, College of Science and Technology, at the University of Salford Manchester. Tested to BS EN ISO 10140-2:2010 (International Standard for Measurement of Airborne Sound Insulation of Building Elements) in a like-for-like installation environment, the Powerclad barrier material was shown to offer superior sound attenuation compared to other products on the market, including acoustic curtain panels.

Powerclad Sound Barrier offers significant advantages over heavy, unwieldy acoustic curtain panels; the material is 40 percent lighter and supplied in sheets or panels, with brass eyelets for easy installation. In addition, Sound Barrier is flame retardant to BS 476 Part 12C, ideal for safety critical installations.

“Sound Barrier’s 10m x 2.2m roll length with top and bottom eyelets makes it manageable, and installing it on traditional tube and fitting scaffold using flush-ended Van Thiel extending transoms was straightforward and provides a nice flush façade to complement the neat sheeted finish,” said Allan Craigen, Managing Director of Heywood Scaffolding Services.

ITP, which has specialist expertise in flame retardant materials, also supplied digitally printed Powerclad Premium scaffold sheeting, which is LPCB approved to LPS1215 and LPS1207 for both printed and unprinted materials.
