Stratford’s Industrial Heritage Inspires Striking New Hotel Development
The Gantry development in East London features the UK’s premier noncombustible membrane for fire-safe building protection
Rising above Stratford’s East Village in London is a major new hotel development designed by ICA. With restaurant and bar spaces on the lower floors, The Gantry includes a 285-room Hilton Curio hotel over 18 floors and a 136-unit long-stay Adagio Aparthotel. Topping the structure is a sky-bar on the 18th floor. The design, with striking two-storey ‘fins’ rising up the cladding, reflects Stratford’s industrial railway heritage, while curved lines and landscaped pockets hark back to the area’s market town past.
The developer, Gantry Devco, appointed Ardmore as the main contractor for the project; Ardmore was responsible for building the Athletes Village for the 2012 Olympic Games and the subsequent conversion to residential units. As befitting such a prestige project, which requires the most stringent design, specification and installation protocols, The Gantry is one of the first buildings in the UK to feature a premier, noncombustible A2 facade breather membrane in its construction. Installed by specialist contractors Erbay Aluminium, the Safe One membrane is supplied by Industrial Textiles & Plastics (ITP) of North Yorkshire.
Safe One was developed to respond to the growing demand for improved fire safety in the construction of buildings over 18m. Changes to UK Building Regulations specify higher performance standards for materials, including cladding, used in the external walls of specified buildings. All materials, with some exceptions, must now be rated noncombustible, as per the EN 13501-1 standard. Safe One is independently tested to this standard and rated Class A2,s1-d0. The Safe One membrane is suitable for vertical wall installations and has a lifetime guarantee for noncombustibility. Another feature of this technologically advanced membrane is exceptional UV resistance, which means it suitable for use behind partially open rainscreens and façades, allowing for creative cladding designs.
ITP has more than 25 years’ experience in flame retardant and chemical resistant technologies. The company’s FlameOut range of flame retardant breather membranes and vapour control layers is independently tested to EN 13501-1 as Class B,s1-d0. Proprietary tapes and adhesives, as well as detailed installation instructions, are offered with both Safe One and FlameOut products.
