The demolition of three 1960s tower blocks on Allanfauld Road in Cumbernauld, Scotland, marked the first stage of a £75 million regeneration of social housing in the area. Replacing the damp and draughty high-rise blocks will be 111 new flats, being constructed for social housing provider Sanctuary, in conjunction with North Lanarkshire Council and the Scottish Government.
Assessment of the site determined NHBC Amber 2 gas protection measures were required. Powerbase® Multigas 300, produced by Industrial Textiles & Plastics Ltd, was supplied to Site Sealants Ltd, the installers at the site. The membrane is an aluminium laminate incorporating a foil between two layers of LDPE and a reinforcing scrim, providing a robust, effective barrier to radon, methane and CO2.
Multigas 300 is fully compliant to BS8485:2015 (Code of practice for the design of protective measures for methane and carbon dioxide ground gases for new buildings).
Responsible for fulfilling the groundworks preparation of the three plots in Seafar is Site Sealants Ltd, a structural waterproofing company based in central Scotland and an approved installer for Powerbase® gas and vapour barrier membranes. “We chose Multigas 300 for this project because it is very cost effective,” said Jon Carmichael, Contracts Manager for Site Sealants. “Our experience with the membrane is that it is very easy to install and weld, and it forms corners well.” The site is more than 3,500 sq m in total, and Site Sealant technicians are installing the membrane in stages, on 400 sq m individual plots.
