World Class Convention Centre

Even as site preparations began in June 2017, global interest in the new £83 million International Convention Centre Wales was high. ICC Wales is scheduled to open in June 2019 and will be the biggest convention centre ever built in Wales and the west of England, capable of hosting 5,000 delegates for events and political conferences.

The project is a joint venture between the Celtic Manor Resort and the Welsh government. Designed by architects Scott Brown Rigg, the centre is being constructed on land next to the Celtic Manor Resort, just off the M4 in South Wales. It will provide 26,000 sqm of floor space, including a 1,500-seat auditorium and an exhibition hall with the largest pillar-free ballroom in Europe. A 2,500 sqm plaza will welcome visitors and provide additional networking and exhibition space. The design includes traditional Welsh slate and complements the existing hotel and sympathetically reflects the surrounding woodlands and landscape.

Groundwork preparation for the large site was assigned to specialist geomembrane installers, ReeveTec Membranes Limited, who jointly bid for the contract with Industrial Textiles & Plastics Limited of North Yorkshire, specifying Powerbase Multigas 300 gas barrier membrane and Powerbase Multigas 300 SA, a self-adhesive tanking membrane. Together, the two membranes, which also act as damp-proofing, provide a high-specification, integrated groundworks solution. Multigas 300 is a multilayer, reinforced LDPE gas barrier member for protection against radon, methane and CO2. It is independently tested to ISO 15105-1 and is compliant to BS 8485: 2015.

Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure Ken Skates said: “This will be a major asset for Wales, enabling us to compete with any venue in the UK and indeed Europe to attract and host key events that make a huge contribution to the economy.”
