ITP Expands Ground Gas Protection Range with Launch of Powerbase Gas NF
ITP has expanded its range of ground gas protection solutions for brownfield and contaminated land applications with the launch of Powerbase Gas NF, a new non-foil gas barrier membrane.
The latest addition to the Powerbase geomembrane range, Powerbase Gas NF has been developed in line with current industry guidance and modern best practice by eliminating the aluminium foil layers traditionally found in many gas membranes, which can be prone to corrosion. Supplied in practical 2m x 30m rolls, the membrane has been independently tested to ISO EN15105-1 permeation test methods for protection against methane, radon and CO₂. The product is compliant with BS 8485, the code of practice for protective measures against methane and carbon dioxide ground gases for new buildings.
The launch highlights ITP’s leadership in membrane innovation, building on more than a decade of expertise in non-foil barrier technology for contaminated land and ground gas protection applications.
Paul Harrison, Head of ITP’s Gas Barrier Team, said:
“Powerbase Gas NF represents another important step forward in membrane technology and reflects the direction the industry is moving towards. Conventional foil-based gas membranes have long provided effective resistance against methane, CO₂ and radon gases, but industry understanding has evolved regarding the potential risks associated with aluminium foil layers when placed in contact with wet concrete or screed.
“If the protective polyethylene layer of a traditional foil membrane becomes damaged, the exposed aluminium can corrode due to the alkaline nature of concrete. This could lead to membrane delamination and reduced effectiveness against gas and vapour ingress.
“By removing the aluminium foil layer, we have developed another high-performance solution that aligns with current guidance while maintaining excellent gas resistance performance.”
Available in a green and black finish, with printing options also available, Powerbase Gas NF is aligned with CIRIA C735 guidance and NHBC Foundation NF94 guidance for non-foil membranes. Powerbase Gas NF is fully compliant to BS4845: 2015 + A1 2019. The membrane is also CE certified to EN 13967 for flexible sheets used in waterproofing applications and compliant with BRE BR 414, Protective Measures for Housing on Gas-Contaminated Land.
ITP was among the first manufacturers to introduce non-foil membranes for hydrocarbon and chemically contaminated brownfield sites more than 10 years ago. The Powerbase range has since been widely adopted across the industry, supported by ITP’s involvement in the development of CIRIA guidance and permeation testing standards for membranes.
The range offers a wide choice of solutions designed to protect against methane, radon, CO₂, hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). ITP also provides Powerbase VOC Modeller, a bespoke software application that enables detailed assessment of potential contaminants on brownfield land and former industrial sites. With in-house technical development and manufacturing capabilities, ITP supplies a comprehensive range of protective membranes for the construction industry, including breather membranes, vapour control layers, and UV façade membranes. The company’s solutions are designed to improve building performance, durability and regulatory compliance across a wide range of applications.
